Summary

Graphic, slightly depressing dystopian read。 One of those linear narratives that don't necessarily go anywhere, but makes you think about humanity and what it means to be human。 Very thought-provoking。 Graphic, slightly depressing dystopian read。 One of those linear narratives that don't necessarily go anywhere, but makes you think about humanity and what it means to be human。 Very thought-provoking。 。。。more

This has been a favorite of my reading the world challenge books so far。 I love a dystopian novel。 This was a very short story and a fast read。 I can’t say I came away with any new knowledge about the country the author was from, but I did enjoy the break from war and suffering having just come off of reading about Chernobyl in my last book。 Not that this book wasn’t bleak, but I did enjoy the escapism of a fantasy novel for a change。 I’d give it 3 1/2 stars。

Haunting, ethereal delirium。 Beautifully painful。

brilliant。 this book kept me thinking throughout the entire story。 one of the rare occasions where i'm satisfied with the ending despite the many questions that i still have。 brilliant。 this book kept me thinking throughout the entire story。 one of the rare occasions where i'm satisfied with the ending despite the many questions that i still have。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Absolutely fantastic。 I enjoy novels that take an objective or otherwise removed perspective of humanity。 This novel, featuring a woman raised in captivity, does exactly that。 Metaphors I expected to find predictable or flowery- that many introspective novels contain- were actually precise, blunt and keenly childish because of the character’s ignorance, as well as the setting’s lack of interactive material。 It’s barren, and probably not earth, with little flora, fauna, or even seasons。 Learn to Absolutely fantastic。 I enjoy novels that take an objective or otherwise removed perspective of humanity。 This novel, featuring a woman raised in captivity, does exactly that。 Metaphors I expected to find predictable or flowery- that many introspective novels contain- were actually precise, blunt and keenly childish because of the character’s ignorance, as well as the setting’s lack of interactive material。 It’s barren, and probably not earth, with little flora, fauna, or even seasons。 Learn to read? Why? How to count? What? How to write? To whom? Excellent examination。 。。。more

Slow post-apocalyptic books are my absolute favorite! This is another one to add to that list。 It's a quiet but meaningful story。 It's hard to put down once the story takes hold。 Slow post-apocalyptic books are my absolute favorite!

This is a new author for me。 I liked this a lot。 The book is sparse but in a good way and it fit the dystopian world between the pages perfectly。 I was never sure what was going on which I really enjoyed。 It's quite a dark read。 This is a new author for me。 I liked this a lot。 The book is sparse but in a good way and it fit the dystopian world between the pages perfectly。 I was never sure what was going on which I really enjoyed。 It's quite a dark read。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book is beautifully written and a very interesting insight into the human psyche where the unnamed narrator questions what it means - and later has to be taught how - to be human。 "Child" tries to understand the complex mechanisms of love from the perspective of someone who has never known or seen it。 She retains her curious fascination for what, for us, is mundane but ultimately embraces that she will never find the sense of meaning she so desperately seeks。 Which brings us to my 3-star ra This book is beautifully written and a very interesting insight into the human psyche where the unnamed narrator questions what it means - and later has to be taught how - to be human。 "Child" tries to understand the complex mechanisms of love from the perspective of someone who has never known or seen it。 She retains her curious fascination for what, for us, is mundane but ultimately embraces that she will never find the sense of meaning she so desperately seeks。 Which brings us to my 3-star rating。 I understand that there's beauty in not knowing and I'm really happy that Child embraced it, but I, like other readers I'm sure, haven't。 I might change my mind once my frustration subsides but for right now: what on earth was going on?! 。。。more

Vast, intimate。 Breathtaking。 A masterpiece in every sense of the word。 The New York Times calling it a “miracle” is perhaps the only time any book could ever truly be called as such。 Every moment in this novel was awe-inspiring。
